HEdCen overwhelmed the competition in the six-a-side Mosman Cup 2008 held at the Nomads Sports Club in Merville Park, Paranaque last weekend, October 25 to 26. Our school got the lion’s share of the titles at stake, winning the championship in three age brackets in the boys’ division and one in the girls’ division, as well as taking runner-up honors in three other categories.

“Holistic” - as the school was constantly referred to by Mosman Cup announcers - pulled off a sweep in the three age brackets in the boys’ division during the first day of the competition. HEdCen Boys’ 2000 beat Tarlac City Football Club, 2-1, in the championship for the under-8 bracket. Individual awards for Most Valuable Player and Highest Goal Scorer went to Gabby Matignas and Luca Alleje.

In the under-10 bracket, after being propelled through the qualifying rounds by Highest Goal Scorer Alain Tanchuan, the HEdCen Boys’ 1998 edged out Quezon City United Football Club in the finals, 3-2, with kiti-kiti striker Jodi Layug performing an incredible hat trick and garnering the MVP award in the process.

Not to be outdone, the ever-reliable HEdCen Boys’ 1996, led by MVP Skie Carranza and Highest Goal Scorer Arvin Resuma, got back at preliminary round tormentor Ateneo de Manila, 1-0, for the under-12 crown.

On the distaff side, HEdCen Girls 1998 nearly made it four in a row for the the school on the first day, losing a squeaker to Miriam College, 1-2, to finish first runner-up in the under-10 category.

In the under-8 bracket, the only mixed category, HEdCen also took first runner-up honors, bowing to the Nomads in the finals.

On Sunday, October 26th, the second day of the Cup, the HEdCen Girls 1994 got into the championship act by beating International School Manila, 2-0, on first half goals by MVP awardee Louise de Guzman and Highest Goal Scorer Mary Rose Obra.

Playing most of the second half undermanned (or “undergirlled”?!?) in the absence of Louise who was forced to leave the pitch on injury, the team hunkered down on defense and held off ISM’s desperation attacks for the win.

Meanwhile, the HEdCen Under-16 Girls, after being overpowered in the semi-finals 1-3 by eventual champion Nomads Thunder, won third place by blanking Miriam College, 1-0, courtesy of Marsha Nackaerts’ superb strike.

Finally, despite doing splendidly in the early rounds, the HEdCen Boys’ 1992 missed out on the semi-finals but nevertheless salvaged some measure of pride when Reginald Gomez earned the Highest Goal Scorer award (nope, that’s not Pea, but Nino Muros happily receiving the trophy on his behalf).
