January 26-29 Sci-Math Festival Circular
19 January 2010
Dear beloved parents,
HEdCen’s Sci-Math Festival will be held on January 26 to 29. During this week, we celebrate and feature our children’s knowledge in the fields of science and math.
The Science Department together with the Math Department considers firsthand experience as the strongest instrument for helping the children understand math concepts and principles behind various scientific phenomena. This is exactly what the Sci-Math festival aims to provide – the opportunity for the students to experience and share what they have learned with other students, teachers and of course with you.
The students will be showcasing their Science Expo projects in selected areas around the campus, and the Math Department will be conducting Math trivia and special challenges at certain times of the day. The festival culminates on Friday with a Marathon for the Tungtong River and a Special Sci-Math Bingo.
Details about the different activities that will be featured throughout the week are given below.
SCIENCE EXPO DEFENSE As a culmination of the year-long science expo project, the students will be given a chance to present and defend their chosen Expo projects to a pair or panel of judges. This allows the students to exhibit how much they know about their topic. Defense and judging will take place every afternoon from Tuesday to Thursday. Levels that are not scheduled for defense on that day will have regular classes in the afternoon. For more details, refer to the cluster schedule below.
MARATHON A 5-km (less for the grade school) marathon will be held for the benefit of the Tungtong River Conservation Project on Friday morning. Routes and starting times will vary according to age of the participants. Categories include A: 9 and below; B: 10-12 years of age; and C: 13 years old and above. Winners of each category will be announced in the afternoon and will be receiving special prizes.
SPECIAL SCI-MATH BINGO This is the traditional Bingo game with a math and science twist. There are several patterns that the participants can compete in and several questions that individual participants can answer. Each correct answer will earn the individual special small prizes while pattern completers will be receiving gift certificates.
BUTTERFLY EXHIBIT A butterfly exhibit will be put up on the 28th and on the 29th. This exhibit will allow the students to see firsthand the different stages in the life cycle of a butterfly. A special enclosure will be filled with butterflies in various stages – pupa, caterpillar, and adult.
To help defray the cost of materials for the festival, an activity fee of 100 pesos will be charged. This fee entitles the student to an entry and a number in the marathon, a one-time pass to the butterfly exhibit, and 3 bingo cards for the special Sci-Math Bingo on Friday. Additional bingo cards can be bought separately for 20 pesos apiece on the day of the Bingo.
A separate but optional souvenir shirt is also available in the business office for 250 pesos, the proceeds of which will go to the continuous efforts of the Tungtong River Conservation Project – an environmental legacy that was initiated several years ago by the school’s first graduates and whose objectives are still being continued by the present students of the school.
To allow our activities to proceed more smoothly, we are encouraging everyone to buy tickets and cards early. For those who will register by Friday (January 22), a discount of 10 pesos from the activity fee will be given.
We invite you to come learn, experience, and appreciate the joys of Science and Math with us in this coming Sci-Math Festival. Hope to see you there!
