HEdCen boys born 1993 star striker Renee Esguerra shakes-off his defender in the RIFA games AY 2004-2005. After the previous summer training, Renee has further developed his ball handling skills, kicking, speed, and strength. He will be HEdCen’s sole striker for this year’s aspirants division and a deadly force for opponents to reckon with.
After one year of rest, former Redwoods midfielder Edward dela Cruz is back to provide depth in the rotation of players in the frontcourt of HEdCen boys born 1996. In seven-a-side games, he will join Skie’s team along with Anton, Jared, Alen, Justin, Angelo, and Jason Layug. Rvin will be the captain of the other born 96 team.
Leon Santos observes something on his knee as he awaits his turn to play on the field in one of the games of boys born 1993 AY 2004-2005. He is joining the campaign of the Redwoods aspirants for its first championship in that division.
Just this morning during the family day, I bumped into Mr. Santos, the dad of Leon Santos of boys born 1993. He greeted me and then said, “Ang lakas na ng highschool team ha.” I agreed with him telling him that the return of Pea and the addition of some new players will make the aspirants team a contender for the championship. I also told him that the most important thing that is happening this year is that most of the players are training regularly.
Coach Sugar and I discuss the status of our teams almost everyday when we meet. Sometimes, T. Emma and T. Ana would leave the dining and find their own spot in the house to discuss something else cause we would go on and on talking about hedcen football the whole evening. So far, everything looks good with the Aspirants team. Renee, Ryan, Zach, Sam, and other highschoolers are training continuously. Along with that, our new players, Eric, Pea, Nino, Shane, and Kevin have been performing well during training with our old students. Calvin, Leon, and Martin are starting to practice including some born 1994 players.
So far, we’ve agreed on a 3-5-1 formation with Sam Vitug as the starting goalkeeper. He will be replaced by Kevin Benjamin if the team needs size on the field. The three defenders will be Zach, Ryan, and maybe Emilio Tan. The wingers will be Kevin and Eric Fernandez while the midfielders will be Nino Muros, Pea Gomez, and Shane. Renee Esguerra will be the team’s only striker. The strength of the team will be rooted in the center midfield area where the Redwoods have the advantage in skill, strength, size, and agility. If the opponents outnumber our center halfbacks, Renee and Eric will be free to push the ball up and even score. At this point though, there is need for much improvement on the left side of last 3rd (defenders). Emilio was absent for this year’s summer training but I am confident that he will be mentally and physically fit to play defense by August. Another concern is our right winger. Kevin can kick but we need to develop his endurance so he can run the ball up the field before crossing. It would also be a big lift for the team if Renee and Eric could further improve their timing and 1 v 1 skills. I am happy that Renee has shown a lot of maturity regarding his attitude this past month with regards to attendance in practice and performance in the summer games. His team will count on him to be stable in the RIFA tournament. Coach Sugar agreed that he is a key component to the team’s success.
There won’t be classes on Monday so I decided to give all athletes a long break. We will resume practice on Tuesday and we will train hard.
This year, Apple Cervania will be ready to carry her team’s defense (Redwoods girls born 1993) on her shoulders.
HEdCen Redwoods 2000 battle hard in practice in preparation for this year’s RIFA games.
They’re not just twins…they’re MEGA twins in football. Defending champion Xavier should better watch out for HEdCen boys 2000 cause Arturo (left) and Luca (right) are playing for the Mighty Redwoods!
We had very good football training today. I speak with regards to the performance of all players of all HEdCen teams. If I were to write about training last year, I would only discuss the performance of boys born 1996. But this year, my perspective of HEdCen football has changed for the betterment of all athletes including myself. My heart is no longer with just one HEdCen team but with that of the entire school.
I want all players to improve, to be the best they could be based on what we could possibly do together to achieve that. I can simply say that I want all the teams to win the championship. But it goes much deeper than that. That is why I pressure each student who calls himself a varsity player to commit to his role as member of the team and practice. This idea is nothing new. Most players understand what I mean by that, to work hard for something, to give it your all, to show your commitment, etc, and based on that some have decided to give-up being a member of the varsity team and others have decided to put meaning into their title as football players of HEdCen. Yes, that is what’s new this year. Athletics is supposed to teach people values such as discipline, hardwork, teamwork, etc., and we will make sure ALL our athletes learn those things in football so they can apply it to other areas of their lives. I always tell the players its not for us coaches, its for “you,” the players.
Today, many many children trained with dedication and determination. We, the coaches, have been challenged to find all ways to upgrade the players’ football game. From purchasing 50 new balls to researching drills for improving ball handling, we came up with the speed ladder exercise which is designed to improve our athletes’ agility and speed. One speed ladder was completed yesterday and I tested the drills with boys born 95 and 96. Today, we used 3 speed ladders made of rope and hose. This drill was incorporated into PE and was a requirement for all players waiting for their turn to play during the practice games.
I think it will take about 2 weeks before all our athletes master the sequence of steps for all speed ladder drills and maybe a month or two before the results will be seen but like all the drills we do for kicking, faking, turning, juggling, all of what we train consistently is an investment for the future game of our athletes.
From boys born 1999 and younger to girls born 1999, HEdCen summer football training - PM session was active the entire summer break. These kids took advantage of more individualized instruction during training sessions and experienced complete set of drills for all areas of football skills development.
