With more than 20 participants, the yaya workshop proceeded very smoothly. The yayas ( and yayo ) were very cooperative and participative.

What lucky children these preschoolers are to have caregivers like these and to have parents supporting important projects like this.

Through activities that integrate different skills and values, children acquire beginning reading, math, and writing skills and develop independence, initiative and confidence. They learn through movements, arts, music and science when they go through real life experiences simulated in the classroom.

When we were told that our dear Teacher Djanah could not accomodate the preschoolers for Music class we right away decided to look for a music teacher. Preschool just won’t be complete without music class! So we searched and now the Preschool Department has recently been joined by Teacher Diana!

T. Diana sang solo for concerts in the Cultural Center of the Philippines and is the resident pianist of her church! She is an FLCD graduate in UP and was an honor student in the said college. She worked as a preschool teacher in a school in Katipunan and after a year, she joined a mission in her church.

“Mission-accomplished” she now joins us not just to teach music but to work with the department in compiling and recording our Discovery Topic - Concept Songs.

T. Diana’s presence has made the children look forward to Tuesdays and Thursdays! Now you wont have to wonder why they look forward to these days

Unfortunately the tight schedule we were left to work with after the 5 day storm gave us no other choice but to hold it on this date.

We began this activity 2 years ago when we realized we had to address the need to educate our yayas further on how to be better at their jobs. Topics such as grooming, pronunciation, first aid, effects of media on (them and) children etc. were taken up. Our seminars would usually last a day but because some parents requested to tackle certain subjects more lengthily we will concentrate on only some of the more important topics.

This Workshop’s topics are the Choosing Appropriate (Media) Shows and Reading Materials for Children, (Teaching and) Protecting a Child’s Personal Boundaries, and Assistance on School Work. Exercises on proper pronunciation will also be given.

The YWS will be from 8am to 12nn. Fee is P250 (snacks and mat’ls included).

Maybe discussing the matter can help answer some questions? By non-sectarian we do not mean “faith-less”. For us it simply means allowing the children to learn to embrace and respect the faiths and spiritual beliefs of others and acknowledging that we are all His children-no favoritism, no one ahead of the other. What we teach here is Values Ed. in place of Religion. And because there are different faiths here, we leave the matter of teaching religion to parents.

This is how it has always been and like T. Emma points out to parents, we have lived harmoniously with each other this way. When they get to Grade 3, children of other faiths are invited to attend the First Holy Communion of their Catholic classmates and stand in as part of the choir. Most of them attend because they are aware of how important this event is for their classmates. They only are able to ofcourse because their parents allowed them.

Teachers may or may not make the sign of the cross. Ofcourse if we are teaching the children to respect the faiths of others, others include their teachers. They do not deserve any less respect, right parents?

We know children at this point tend to follow whatever the teacher (or the majority) does. So, teachers in turn (should) make it clear that children may pray however way they are accustomed to for as long as it is respectful to the One we pray to

We hope parents not only understand but support the school in teaching the children this kind of tolerance and respect. They need not believe in the same things right?

In class, we pray the Body Prayer (said with actions).
