the all-new midterms

Filed under: teaching — ramilphuyow @ 2:21 am

Changes have been happening all around the campus since the start of this school year - from the drop-dead gorgeous computer lab, to the new classrooms, and even to the science curriculum. Yet, there are things that seem to be beyond reform.

The midterm, for example, has remained untouched ever since I could remember. The smell of panic in the teachers’ lounge during this season of deadlines, the eye bags growing ever so largely in the teachers’ faces, the tension building up in the classroom as students start worrying about the difficult topics - all virtually untouched in my 5 years of stay in school. The only things that change are the faces of the students and the faces of the teachers. Haha!

Well, actually it’s not as unscathed as it appears to be. Although this year’s midterm season seems to just follow the previous years’ patterns, there are still some changes. For example, instead of the previous 4-day test schedule, this year’s midterm will be composed of just 3 examination days. Also, instead of the exams being taken during class time, there will be no more classes for this year’s testing period. Students will now just come to school for the exams and be off by lunch time. Cool noh? Even the exam format itself was not spared from the onslaught of changes. In the previous years, each teacher was known for his/her exam’s own particular look. Now, all exams will look relatively, if not completely, similar.

These are all part of the school-wide move to unify the departments and make the various segments of the school consistent in all formats - from the test pattern all the way to the test dates. If you don’t believe me, just wait for the midterms and see for yourself. Hehe!

Here’s to change! Cheers!
