triumphs and heartaches

Exams are one of the best ways to check how much a student has learned from a teacher. I, personally believe that a student’s performance in an exam reflects his or her teacher’s capabilities no matter how small a factor the teacher plays in the students life.

Big words ha! Does this mean all my students pass my exams? Nope! On the contrary, I’ve rarely had an exam with a hundred percent passing rate. Huhu! Sad, I know. That’s why I’ve never stopped questioning my self about my own capacity. This has always been my bane - my cross.

The funny thing is, during exams, whenever I am assigned to proctor or keep watch of a class (especially if its my exam they’re taking), I can almost see the students’ contempt in their eyes - like I’m some sort of torturer. I can’t blame them though because I used to think that way too.

When I was a lot younger, I used to think that teachers gloat over their students’ incapacity to answer the exams. In fact, I remember every time I took an exam, I could swear hearing my teachers laugh whenever they’d get a quick glimpse at my paper. And now, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that my students think that way about me too.

The sad part about it is they don’t have the slightest idea that we are as scared as them during exams. They don’t realize that their failures are our heartaches and their achievements - our triumphs. I seriously doubt that they know how agonizing it is to constantly evaluate and re-evaluate yourself to find out how, why and where did you commit a mistake in teaching.

Are my strategies becoming obsolete, irrelevant or ineffective? Am I becoming obsolete?

Haay! If only they knew. If only they knew…
