Creating hyperlinks

What is a hyperlink? In non-geeky terms, it may be a text or a graphic which, when clicked, will bring you to another web page or another portion of the same web page. It is created with HTML tags.

In Wordpress, because we can post entries using the “Visual” mode, we don’t have to type in the tags manually or what we call hardcoding. All it takes is knowing how to highlight, left-click and right-click.

Okay. We’re using the same graphic we used in the previous entry but we’re focusing on the icons labeled #11 and #12. Icon #11 creates a hyperlink while icon #12 removes an existing hyperlink.

post a blog entry

The easiest way to create a text hyperlink is to type the text first then highlight it by pressing the left button of your mouse and dragging it across the text. Alternatively, you can double left click on the text itself. It doesn’t matter which way you choose, the important thing is that you highlight the text.

Once highlighted, click on the “link” icon represented by a link chain and labeled #11 above. A small window will pop up.

adding hyperlinks in Wordpress

In “Link URL”, you type or paste the link to the page you want to link to. In the “Target” drop down menu, click the arrow on the right side of the box to choose whether you want the link to open in the same window as your page or in a new one. In “Title”, type a description for the page you are linking to. Click the “Insert” button and the link is created.

Let’s try to make one, shall we?

Open your “Write Post” page in another tab or window. In the text box, type “recipes” without the quotes and let’s turn it into a link to my cooking blog at http://www.pinoycook.net.

You’ve typed “recipes”? Okay, good. Now, highlight http://www.pinoycook.net then right-click your mouse and in the window that opens, left-click copy.

Now, highlight “recipes” and click on the “link” icon. When the “Insert/edit Link” box opens, right-click inside the “Link URL” box and in the window that opens, left-click paste. “http://www.pinoycook.net” should now be inside the “Link URL” box.

Choose whether you want the link to open in the same or new window. In the “Title” box, type “the best cooking and recipes blog” without the quotes.

Click the “Insert” button, the window closes and you have a hyperlink.

Now, highlight the hyperlink that you created and click on the broken link icon — the one labeled #12. The link disappears and the word “recipes” becomes a plain text once more.

Easy, right?
